Having a hard time finding a place to donate your used books? With the Vancouver Public Library and bookstores not accepting books over the last year, it’s been difficult for readers to find a place to donate their books. Well, we’re going to make it easy for you!
As used book sellers, we typically scour enormous used book and warehouse sales to replenish our stock. Well, COVID-19 has put those sales on hold and instead we are using this opportunity to fundraise for Indigenous Creative Writing Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and the Writers’ Exchange!
What we want: Your used books! We ask that you don’t include any of the following: ex-library books, National Geographics, Reader’s Digest, romances, series westerns (think Louis L’Amour), Time Life sets, computer/audio books, or heavily damaged books. Unfortunately, we’ll have to return any of these books when receiving.
What they do & how: Raise money for the JoAnne Ward Creative Writing Award for Indigenous students and the Writers’ Exchange. Once all donated books are collected, Massy Books and a team of volunteers and staff will sort through and decide which titles to purchase. We will pay $1 for paperbacks, $2 for trade paperbacks, $3 for hardcover books, and up to 30% of our selling price for newer, in-demand titles. If you have valuable or scarce titles, we can look at those as well. Books not taken will either be further sold or donated.
How to donate: Starting April 1st, we can start accepting books at Massy Books any day between 10-6 pm, with a preference for Sunday and Mondays. We ask that anyone with more than 10 boxes drop off their books in the alleyway of 405 Prior St. (east of Dunlevy, second garage on the south side), on the following dates and times:
April 17th: 1 – 4 pm
May 1st: 1 – 4 pm
May 15th: 1 – 4 pm
May 29th: 1 – 4 pm
June 12th: 1 – 4 pm
If you have an extremely large collection that won’t fit in your vehicle, please email Patricia at [email protected] to schedule a house call. No collection is too big!
