SUMMARY:John Velten: The Gravity That Forms Us (Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:John Velten’s artistic practice is a relational philosophy made material. Deeply invested in understanding selfhood from a continual\, circular\, set of emergent relationships\, Velten prompts visitors to ask themselves: what connections have been crucially important to me? His professional history attests to his strong belief in the power of relationship building. Velten’s artistic biography is rich with community and collaborative projects\, having worked on initiatives such as Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week\, Vancouver Art Community Live Painting\, Vancouver Mural Festival\, and many more.  \nHis articulation of relationality calls attention to the expansiveness of these cultivated networks. Across self\, persons\, earth\, and spirit\, the largest experiences of connection begin with the personal and a deep trust in intuition. Looking inwards\, one must take care of themselves\, recognizing that this self is always shaped by forces outside it. Velten calls attention to which worlds we ought to invest in\, and those that in turn invest in us. These worlds are often personal\, as are the artistic mentorships he has been a part of with Tahltan artist Alano Edzerza and Haida artist Rick Adkins. Yet\, they extend beyond the physical\, material\, bodily self into the spiritual and celestial. As gravity forms circles\, so to do circles form us \nAbout the Artist \nBorn and raised in Kwikwetlem (Coquitlam)\, John Velten has been an illustrator from a young age\, possessing over 10 years of drawing and illustrative practice\, three years of fine arts production and one year of event producing experience. John’s studied Business and Fine Arts production under the mentorship of Alano Edzerza and Design Foundations through the mentorship of Rick Adkins. He continues his practice carving and sculpting with Phil Gray and Klatle Bhi. Throughout the year of 2019\, John’s involvement with the community has been providing & facilitating meetups for artists\, providing spaces for creatives to pull together in the genres of visual art\, music\, dance and storytelling. He currently is studying part-time at the Visual College of Art and Design in the 3D modelling and animation program and is set to graduate December 2020. John works independently as a fine artist\, within modes of expression such as\, painting\, carving\, metal works\, mixed media\, 3D modelling and illustration. In the past 3 year\, portions of John’s  works have been commissioned by The City of Vancouver\, Vancouver Mural Festival\, Vancouver art community\, Lunar Fest and Foundry BC. John’s Mixed roots stem from Europe\, with German ancestry and North-West Territories with Dene ancestry. These Contrasting lineages speak to his perspective\, ability as an artist and affluence of different cultures. \nTo Purchase Artworks \nArtworks are for sale directly from the artist. Please visit: https://northweststyles.com/ \nAccessibility \nThis exhibition takes place upstairs in the Massy Gallery\, which is only accessible by a flight of stairs. SUMMARY:Nya Lewis for BlackArt Gastown: Quilt of Hope
DESCRIPTION:The Quilt of Hope is an installation that asks artists to consider their role in the movement\, and what art expression has to teach us about radical activism. It shares the perspectives of  practicing artists across  the Lower Mainland  in a collection of 25 quotes\, responding to the question “What is the role of Artists in dismantling anti-Black racism?” \nArtist and Curator: Nya Lewis for BlackArt Gastown \nAbout the Artist/Curator: \nNya Lewis’ practice is a culmination of centuries of African resistance\, love\, questions\, actions\, study\, embrace and exposure in the face of failed neo-colonial attempts at erasure. Nanyamka’s expression is powered by the perpetual engine of truth-explored\, uncompromised. It interrupts\, it educates\, it asks\, it unites\, it celebrates a Canada with all voices present\, with all voices heard\, with actions taken and commitment to justice declared. The artist sees her practice as a continuation of a long lineage of work undertaken by Black artists\, curators\, writers\, activists and thinkers who blaze(d) a trail of critical discourse surrounding the Black Canadian Experience. Lewis’ creative practice reflects upon the diversity of Black diasporic experiences and its many forms of expression. As such\, she works across the disciplines of art making\, curating and writing. Her work is multivalent in form and expression but is always driven by the reimagining and reclaiming of community. \nLewis is a MFA candidate at OCAD University\, an Independent curator currently serving as the Programming Coordinator at Vancouver Queer Film Festival and the founder and director of BlackArt Gastown. \nAccessibility\n \nThis exhibition takes place upstairs in the Massy Gallery\, which is only accessible by a flight of stairs. Unfortunately\, no audio or visual tours are available at this time.⁣\n⁣\nMasks are mandatory while in Massy Books.⁣

SUMMARY:Watch Your Head: Reading and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:A warning\, a movement\, a collection borne of protest. \n\n\nIn Watch Your Head\, poems\, stories\, essays\, and artwork sound the alarm on the present and future consequences of the climate emergency. Ice caps are melting\, wildfires are raging\, and species extinction is accelerating. Dire predictions about the climate emergency from scientists\, Indigenous land and water defenders\, and striking school children have mostly been ignored by the very institutions – government\, education\, industry\, and media – with the power to do something about it. Writers and artists confront colonization\, racism\, and the social inequalities that are endemic to the climate crisis. Here the imagination amplifies and humanizes the science. These works are impassioned\, desperate\, hopeful\, healing\, transformative\, and radical.\n\nThis is a call to climate-justice action.\n\nJoin us for a discussion between editor Elena Johnson and contributors Francine Cunningham\, Ruth Daniell\, Jane Shi\, Jessica Magonet\, and Anna Swanson. Watch Your Head is available for purchase from Indigenous owned independent bookstore Massy Books. Find it here: https://bit.ly/2LZsbRx\n\n\n\nRegistration mandatory! Click here to register. \n\n\n\n \n\nProceeds from Watch Your Head will be donated to RAVEN and Climate Justice Toronto\n \n\nRAVEN raises legal defence funds to assist Indigenous Peoples who enforce their rights and title to protect their traditional territories. Through our public education programs\, RAVEN collaborates with Indigenous Peoples to eliminate environmental racism and foster a greater understanding of indigenous rights and governance. Website: https://raventrust.com/\n \nClimate Justice Toronto is a grassroots group of young people across the Greater Toronto Area who seek to build an irresistible and powerful movement to stop the climate crisis by confronting its root causes: capitalism\, colonialism\, and white supremacy.
