DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening of the Massy Gallery’s newest exhibition\, Mike Alexander’s “Internal Landscapes”! \nThe opening reception will begin at 6 pm on February 1st in the Massy Gallery (upstairs at 229 E Georgia St). The show will be exhibiting until February 29th. \n— \n“Internal Landscapes” reflects the artist’s practice as a process of decolonization. Speaking of these paintings\, Mike Alexander says\, “These works document my ongoing transformation and reclamation of what belongs to me\, and in doing so\, I feel a closer connection to who I am and pride in what I am able to share from a good place in my heart.” \nMike Alexander is an emerging Anishinaabe artist originally from Swan Lake First Nation in Manitoba. He has attended the University of Victoria\, the Pacific Design Academy\, the Vancouver Island School of Art and the Victoria College of Art. He is honoured to receive mentorship from master carver and recipient of the Order of BC\, Carey Newman (Kwagiulth). Since 2015\, his large acrylic paintings have appeared in four solo exhibitions in Victoria\, Vancouver and Kamloops\, as well as several group shows across Canada. A student of the Woodlands School of Art\, Mike proudly celebrates his ongoing transformation and reclamation and reconnection he feels with his Ojibway culture using art as a process of healing. \n  \nThis event is taking place on the unceded territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tseil-Waututh Nations. \nAccessibility information: the Massy Gallery is currently only accessible by a flight of stairs. \nMassy Books is easy to reach by transit! DESCRIPTION:Join Abena Beloved Green for a reading of new poems and poems from The Way We Hold On (Pottersfield Press 2018). \nA freelance writer\, dancer and poet\, Abena Beloved Green\, uses her artistic works as a means to elevate people of all ages and backgrounds. Maintaining a distinct and authentic voice\, her poems address cultural\, social\, and environmental issues. Reflecting on everyday life as a small-town raised\, semi-nomadic\, first-generation resident of Turtle Island. A Ghanian-Canadian who grew up in Nova Scotia\, she now resides in Eastern Ontario. \nIn 2016\, Abena became the poetry prize winner of the Writer’s Federation of Nova Scotia’s Nova Writes competition; and the third-place finalist in the 2017 Canadian Individual Poetry Slam (Verses Festival of Words). She was also a two-time Halifax Slam Team member in the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (CFSW) in 2011 and 2016. Abena has gone on to share a stage with George Elliot Clarke\, Afua Cooper\, David Woods and Jessica Care Moore. Her work has appeared in the Global Fund for Women’s Imagining Equality project\, Oratorealis (Vancouver) and Open Heart Forgery (Halifax). Her spoken word album ‘Beloved’ debuted in July 2014 with the support of the Ontario Arts Council. The Way We Hold On (Pottersfield Press\, 2018 ) marks Abena’s first collection of poetry and was released in March 2018. \nAn enthusiast of African dance forms\, Abena has spent over ten years dancing and teaching traditional and modern West African Dances and Step (also referred to as stomp). Founder of the step team\, Lady Step in 2003\, Abena incorporates aspects of dance and movement into her poetic offerings. Abena enjoys exploring the connection between arts and health and culture. Through gripping and accessible historical narrative paired with illustrations\, author and activist Blair Imani examines the largely overlooked impact of The Great Migration and how it affected–and continues to affect–Black identity and America as a whole. \nMaking Our Way Home explores issues like voting rights\, domestic terrorism\, discrimination\, and segregation alongside the flourishing of arts and culture\, activism\, and civil rights. At the heart of the expedition are three young women\, friends whose lives seem at risk of drifting apart as they approach middle age. While buoyed by the pleasures of adventure and camaraderie\, and by a deep reverence for nature\, Simmers finds herself struggling to inhabit the trip’s trickier elements—storms\, insects\, physical fatigue\, conflict\, doubt\, and disorientation—and\, as with the challenges and changes in her own life\, to embrace them with confidence. Recounted in a journal-entry style with poems interleaving each day’s narrative\, Pivot Point is a frank reflection on the roles friendship\, mindfulness and creativity play in the evolution of our lives. \nBren Simmers’ first book of non-fiction\, Pivot Point (Gaspereau Press\, 2019)\, is a lyrical account of a nine-day wilderness canoe journey and a frank reflection on the roles friendship\, mindfulness\, and creativity play in the evolution of our lives. She is also the author of two books of poetry\, Night Gears (Wolsak & Wynn\, 2010) and Hastings-Sunrise (Nightwood Editions\, 2015)\, which was a finalist for the City of Vancouver Book Award. A lifelong West Coaster\, she now lives on PEI. \nRaoul Fernandes lives and writes in Vancouver\, BC. His first collection of poems\, Transmitter and Receiver (Nightwood Editions\, 2015) won the Dorothy Livesay Award and the Debut-litzer Award for Poetry in 2016 and was a finalist for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award and the Canadian Authors Association Award for Poetry. \nShazia Hafiz Ramji’s first book\, Port of Being (Invisible Publishing)\, received the Robert Kroetsch Award for Innovative Poetry and was chosen by CBC as one of the best Canadian poetry books of 2018. Her fiction and criticism have appeared in The Humber Literary Review and Quill & Quire\, respectively. She lives on unceded Coast Salish land (Vancouver) where she began the Intersections Reading Group and where she works as a publishing consultant and editor for various presses across Canada. \nRob Taylor lives in Port Moody\, BC with his wife and children.
